On its surface, the American Revolution looks like an event built around politics. The American colonists weren't happy with their government under the English, so they fought to gain their freedom and control their own government. And while that fact will never change, when one digs a little deeper, the underlying human rights issues become much more apparent.
This blog is here to do exactly that: reexamine the American Revolution from the perspective of our present-day human rights norms. Using the standards put forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), this blog will determine the human rights violations that led the colonists to act in protest against the British. Perhaps more importantly, there will be a discussion about the impact of the American Revolution on human rights in the colonies.
